(Crawshanks Guide to the Recently Departed Book 1 of 7) by Vawn Cassidy.

In the business of unfinished business...

Tristan Everett has always preferred the company of the dead because they usually don't talk back. Being a somewhat awkward introvert working as a pathologist at the Hackney Public Mortuary suits him just fine. That is, until a freak accident with a rogue ice cube and suddenly he can see ghosts.

Just when he thought his life couldn't get any weirder, sassy drag queen, Dusty Le Frey, is wheeled in with a toe tag and she's not prepared to go quietly into the light. Not only is she furious at the prospect of spending eternity in last season's gold lame, she's determined that he help her solve her murder.

Suddenly Tristan finds himself thrown into a world of sequins and fake eyelashes, and worse still, he may have developed a bit of a crush on Scotland Yard's brand new drool-worthy detective, Inspector Danny Hayes, who's been assigned to Dusty's murder. Oh, and as the icing on top of a really crappy cake, the killer now wants him dead too...

All he ever wanted was a simple life but suddenly he's juggling work, a deliciously sexy detective, a stubborn ghost and a relentless murderer... and things have just gotten dead serious...

What begins as Tristan (very reluctantly) getting roped into an after work social event with his coworkers at the pub, kicks off a chain of events that will completely alter his world. Tristan must learn to navigate his new abilities, how they factor into his life as a Forensic Pathologist, and come to terms with “why him all people?!?”.

Not to mention, he can’t seem to figure out how to act like a normal human being (not a complete weirdo with the strangest social skills….ever) in front of the most handsome man alive, Danny, a detective for the Scotland Yard.

As we ride along with Tristan into the world of the paranormal, Book 1 introduces us to the most interesting, and bizarre, starting cast of characters - Chan, Madam Vivianne, the Rainbow Room Crew, Tristan and Danny’s co-workers…and the most fabulous of all, Miz Dusty Le Frey!

Of course, Tristan figuring out he can see and interact with the recently deceased Drag Queen isn’t the worst of his problems. Somehow, Tristan is supposed to help find Dusty find her unfinished business so she can pass on, while now also having to navigate around Danny since he’s been assigned to Dusty’s investigation.

Vawn does a spectacular job setting up our backstory, introducing us to the main crew, a few cameos of others that could become regulars, and writing a book that combines the seriousness of a murder investigation with absolute hilarity! What more can you expect from a socially awkward Forensic Pathologist, a detective who takes his job very seriously, and a dead drag queen who is as dramatic in ghost form as she was when she was alive.

You will absolutely not regret picking up this book and getting hooked into the Dead Serious world. Honestly, just buy the whole series so far because these are going to be hardcore binge read material! Five-zillion Stars!!!

It was recommended to me, and I was a bit wary about it, but damn, did I love it. It was funny, yet a bit sad (just because of Danny's job) but also beautiful and amazing. I loved the plot, the characters, the ghosts, the romance. I loved it so much, it has become a comfort read i will never stop re-reading.

5/5 I love Tristan and Danny so much! They’ve got the best meet ugly, and Tristan has such a shocking induction into the world of paranormal and ghosts. I appreciated so much how he treats the deceased at his job. It’s clear how much he cares, and that only becomes more obvious as things get spooky.

Meanwhile, Danny and Tristan are adorable together, and I love Danny being able to be himself here and find someone like Tristan. It was fun to watch their relationship grow even amidst figuring out the case.

And of course, Dusty is an absolute star, and I love her!

This is such a fun continuing series!

I have bought this book as I love this series i read them on KU but I decided I wanted to keep them so cam to buy. I love the characters, the love story between them, whether it is friendship or Danny and Tristan falling in love. Just fantastic. I love the paranormal so this is a perfect series for me.

This is a plot-driven story at its heart. Tristan is a lonely man whose cat barely tolerates him.

Danny completes Tristan in a way that feels genuine rather than convenient. He doesn't try to fix Tristan's awkwardness or smooth out his edges, he simply accepts him.

Then comes Dusty. She is everything Tristan isn't: bold, loud, and unafraid to take up space. Watching them navigate grief, friendship, and an amateur murder investigation together is genuinely funny.

Overall, a charming, funny, and surprisingly moving read. Recommended.

Dead Serious Case #1 Miz Dusty Le Frey is the first book in the Crawshanks Guide to the Recently Departed series. This is the story of Tristan a pathologist and Danny a Scotland yard detective. Tristanwas just your normal introverted pathologist until he chokes on an ice cube and dies for one minute, when he comes back he can now see and talk to ghosts. I loved the characters and world building that went into this book. Tristan is such a sweet guy who is cute too. Danny is hot and the perfect person for Tristan. This is a slow burn romance. The romance takes a backseat to the story. Dusty Le Frey is a drag queen who was murdered and when she realizes Tristan can see her she wants to help solve her murder. This leads to some fun and interesting events. I really enjoyed Dusty's personality, she is a hoot. I can't wait for the next book in the series. I would definitely recommend this book as a 5 star read.

I have read this book at least three times since I found this series in 2024, and I can say it is a hit every time. Every time I read this book, I find new things that I love about it and I find new ways to fall in love with the characters, their personalities, and their chemistry (sometimes in the bedroom lol).
Danny and Tristan are just made for each other and their love makes me want to have a love of my own. The friendship between Tristan and Dusty is always great, and her commentary that only Tristan can hear is always hilarious. This story makes me want more of the characters, more of their relationships, and more crazy chaos. No matter how many times I read this story it’ll forever be a 5 star read!!

I loved this book and can see many more rereads in my future.

Tristan is a bumbling intorvert and Danny a suave police Inspector, who come together with an immediate chemistry that is there but slow to fully burn. But, When it does...! The characters are all lovable and most are so much fun and interesting to get to know. There is so much charm, sweetness, humor and snark/sass in this book that it is hard to move into the more poignant parts. I am adding that there is a character with advanced dementia that may be hard for some to read about.

This is one of those books with laughter and tears all rolled into 1 amazingly entertaining and heartfelt story. I can't wait for the rest of the series!!

Dead Serious is the first instalment in the Crawshanks Guide to the Recently Departed series from Vawn Cassidy. With such an extremely enticing blurb, I simply had to see how this story would live up!

The premise of a forensic pathologist suddenly being able to commune with the spirits of the bodies on which he’s currently performing post mortems is fascinating enough. But, the beauty of this story is that the pathologist, Tristan, is a clumsy introvert with no confidence, and his first spirit happens to be a sassy drag queen, Dusty. Dusty ends up being some sort of life coach for Tristan as he explores his attraction to the investigator, Danny, who is in charge of Dusty’s murder. Whew!

This book is more than fun, spooks and sass. There’s a deep thread of connection throughout the story, not only with Tristan and Danny as the main romantic characters, but Dusty who provides a crucial element between all of the brilliantly crafted cast. Dusty’s wisdom, guidance and humour ultimately provide some of the most emotional moments in the narrative.

I fell quickly for Tristan and Danny and, even though they have a lot of barriers to overcome, their romantic thread provides plenty of heat and heart. The mystery to be solved is intriguing and kept me guessing throughout the entire book. But most of all, I love Dusty. She has so much depth and personality and brought so much delightful dialogue!

Readers looking for an emotional journey (laughs and tears), who enjoy movie and song quotes and snappy chit-chat with their quirky paranormal reads will simply adore Dead Serious. And like me, I’m sure you’ll be thoroughly enchanted by Vawn Cassidy’s wonderful writing. I am really looking forward to book 2!

What a cast of characters we have in this book. The two main characters, Tristan and Danny are written so well. Tristan is socially awkward, has a huge heart, can be a smidge clumsy, is totally adorable and totally competent in his job. Danny is very good looking, appreciates Tristan and all his quirks, is protective and caring and is also great at his job.

Their first meeting is highly unusual but it does spark Tristans newly acquired ability and the connection between the two of them. A connection that strengthens the more time they spend together as the mystery element of the plot unfolds. This element brings us into the world of a ghostly drag queen and the wonderful side character of Dusty who brings humour and sass as well as some feels to the story. This is all beautifully balanced with the slow burn romance that includes a sizzling and mind blowing kiss and a sexy Halloween costume which leads into a very steamy scene filled with tenderness, heated passion and some hilarity.

This is a very enjoyable and engaging read that kept me turning the pages and had me finishing in one sitting. Be prepared for some laugh out loud moments, some heartwarming moments and some feels that all combine to leave you feeling happy at the end. The ending is a HFN and I look forward to more in the series.
