(Crawshanks Guide to the Recently Departed Book 5 of 7) by Vawn Cassidy.

For one brief shining moment, the utter insanity that is Tristan Everett’s world makes sense.

He’s marrying the man he loves, has a dead drag queen for a bestie and is surrounded by an amazing found family. Okay, so his life isn’t exactly what you’d call normal. By day, he’s a quiet, mild-mannered forensic pathologist, but the rest of the time, he guides lost souls into the light. He’s also averted an apocalypse, stopped Chaos from coming through a magic door, and drunk tequila with Death.

It’s all a bit bonkers, but it’s his life… and he loves it.

He’s flying high but, like Icarus, it’s only a matter of time before he’s brought crashing down to earth with singed wings. The strange reality of his life intrudes once again when his friend, Madame Vivienne, is murdered, and it’s clear from the beginning that this is no ordinary killing.

Someone is using dark magic.

Viv’s soul has been bound, leaving her trapped and unable to communicate. Tristan, Danny, and their friends must uncover the truth and find the killer. But the deeper they delve into the old bookshop in Whitechapel, which has been in the Crawshanks family for generations, the darker and the more dangerous the secrets that begin to unravel.

And what they discover may just change their lives forever…

This book was absolutely hilarious, heart-wrenching, and wonderful. I'm sad to see that Danny and Tristan's part of this story is over (for now), but thrilled for the spin-offs coming our way! The Haunted Hotel and Little Shop of Curiosities will continue to keep us in the Crawshanks world, and of course the Death and Chan shorts will too!

Danny is finally figuring out what career path he's meant for in life, Tristan's finally learning that his gift gives him a higher purpose. Harrison learns sooooooo much about himself (and the others finally get a peek behind the mysterious man). Sam is just the best. And of course Miz Dusty steals the show any way she can, just as fabulous as ever! We even get more of Death and Chan - who I absolutely ADORE. And maybe some young teenage love blooming in the background?

***Possible Spoiler***

TW - Death of a parent.

Even though we've known Tristan's Dad was going to pass on at some point during this series, it didn't make when it happened any less devastating.

I will say that this book was extremely hard for me to continue on when it hit that point because my Dad died in a freak accident right around the same time. Getting to the part where Tristan's Dad moved on was heart-wrenchingly painful. Vawn handled this so well, and very much encompassed the mental state of grief/depression/hopelessness of someone who loses a parent that means everything to them.

Oh, boy, did i cry. I very ugly cried. I cried so badly. I hated the crying, and why i was crying. But at the same time...i was also happy, if that made sense. I think people reading it will understand what i mean. I adore this series. Like...i can't even begin to to describe how much i adore this series. It will forever remain my absolute favorite MM romance series. Forever and ever.

I have deeply enjoyed this series. Getting to read Danny and Tristan’s story with all their friends and family thrown in has been amazing. Each story is so well written and brings me into the story so well that I forget I’m reading. And honestly this book was not one to disappoint.
The love between Danny and Tristan is one I want to find for myself someday. The love between everyone in the group was palpable, especially when they stood beside Danny and Tristan through their grief. They aren’t just friends but family and would do anything for each other no matter what. Honestly, I enjoyed everything about this book, and will probably do a reread of the series soon.
I am sad to see this series end, but glad and looking forward to reading Sam and Harrison’s story when it comes out.

This book is a perfect ending to the series. I cried when Tristan lost his father, but Danny and Tristan's relationship is so strong, and having them get married at the bookshop was a beautiful and fitting choice.

Seeing Vivienne the way she was in this book was truly heartbreaking. We also get some insights into Harrison's family history, which added so much depth to the story. And setting the stage for his book.

Now I'm really looking forward to Harrison and Sam's story! Having already read Olivia and Theo's story, it was lovely getting to know a little more about that world. I'm curious whether Hades or any other characters from the Guardians series will appear in their book.

Dead Serious case 5 is the 5th book in the Crawshanks Guide to the Recently Departed series. We are back with Danny and Tristan as they try to help their friend Madame Vivienne who was murdered. I love this series so much. There is everything I need in a good book here. We get a great plot, wonderful characters, amazing world building, and plenty of steam. I couldn't put this book down once I started it because I had to see what would happen next. I hope we get another book in this series. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

I just finished reading Vawn Cassidy's "Dead Serious Case #5: Madame Vivienne," and, I'm still attempting to absorb it all. I have to start off with saying how this was an amazing finale to what has been an amazing series. A lot of things throughout the series are brought full circle, and the author does warn that there are some hard things to read and other reviews mention crying. So be prepared if you are a fan and plan to read this book. This is not a stand-alone. There are a lot of things that are ongoing from previous books and they are needed for a better understanding of current events.

I don't want to give any spoilers but fans of the series can probably guess at the "big sad" that happens in this book so should be prepared, but other things happen that are also a bit sad, like learning more about "Viv," and her family legacy, plus other hints about the histories of other characters. Outside of the sad parts, there were still plenty of laughs (some also causing tears) and the characters were up to their typical shenanigans. It all culminated in a very fitting ending that opened doors for future book spin-offs set in this ever expanding paranormal world. I know there are quite a few characters and possible relationships I would love to see more of.

The ending also has a bit of a cross-over with another series written by the author under a different pen name and that series is another I will 100% have to read.

I never thought that starting on book no 1 on a whim would lead me to mourn the end of a fantastic series.

This book puts you through a rollercoaster of emotions, the loss of Vivienne, the case blocking new detective who has it in for Danny and Tris, Martin, more twist and turns then you ever had in these books.

The author writes a book you want to read non-stop but also not to avoid finishing it. You know what I mean? The dread you feel when your favourite is over and a series is done.

But - while this one closes, there is plenty of new ideas for this crazy, loving, mismatched bunch of a found family, ghosts and not. There is more on the horizon for the two who bicker just a bit too much and with Danny's nephew on the scene, you never know what will happen there.

Dear goodness, go read them all just so you can read this one! Will write more after I get dinner on the table!

Back...what do you say about the perfect wrapup to such a wonderful series...it's tender, poignant, sad, smexy, silly, scary. Heck, there's even a Scooby moment in the middle of all of it! Yes, there are sad times but one in particular has been inevitable since the first book. Vawn does such justice to the grieving rage, despair you can feel when your heart has been ripped from your chest. So read the TW/CW's. DSC #5 finally gives us the resolution of the mystery of the bookshop and Viv. Tris and Danny find out, holy cow, more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of...! Throughout all of this, they are helped by their found family of characters with visits from some Wendy Saunders' characters. I wish I could say this could be read as a standalone, but it truly can't be. The last scene, the last line, is perfection!! While this is the ending of Dead Serious but it's not the end of the lovely world, we are getting Sam and Harrison's story (stories??) and more! Can't wait!

Tristan, Danny, Dusty and the rest of the gang are back to solve another interesting and intriguing case once again associated with the Crawshank family bookshop in Whitechapel and what a case it is! There’s plenty of drama and action with some danger and dastardly villains doing dastardly deeds until they get their comeuppance in an awesome final battle. Throw in the odd twist in the tale and it was a one sitting read for me that grabbed my attention and wouldn’t let me stop until the very last page.

There’s plenty of opportunities for laughter along the way and I adored the numerous outfits that Dusty wears during the crisis. I also cried, sobbed and cried some more as Tristan and Danny faced the inevitability of Martin’s diagnosis. The author gives fair warning and she kept her promise of being able to put my shattered heart back together. Please be aware if this is a trigger.

I have adored this series and here’s why - a found family of wonderful characters who wholeheartedly love each other, masterful world building, epic storyline’s that gripped me and wouldn’t let me go and a series conclusion that was extremely gratifying and made my heart happy.

Although this is the end of the series overall story arc it’s not the last we will see of these wonderful characters as their universe expands with more action to follow and I cannot wait.
